Contains chiefly the author's working files of all 182 of her poems, most of which are represented by multiple revisions. Many of the poems reflect the author's close and enduring relationship to Iowa, while others express the disparate aspects of her life as a woman, her perceptions of nature, personal losses, and illness. Also includes calendars, correspondence, photographs, graphics from the Chicago Institute of Design where Filipowska studied in the 1940s as well as additional self-portraits and drawings, and samples of Richard Filipowski's own designs labelled "pub drawings" and the memoirs of his childhood in Canada entitled "Terra Cotta episodes 1927-1932." Principal correspondents include the author's parents, Helen and Guerdon Parker, and the Filipowski's son and daughter-in-law, Matthew and Yvonne Filipowski. The papers also include Filipowska's posthumously discovered private diary entitled, Letters to myself, which contains her candid reflections on her personal life, her relationship with her husband and children, and her friendship with the artist, Robert Burrus, of Burlington, Iowa.

Poet, born in Burlington, Iowa; resident of Lexington, Mass. From 1981 to 1993, Filipowska attended advanced poetry seminars taught by Kinereth Gensler at Radcliffe College. Under the feminine form of her husband's surname as her penname, Filipowska's poetry was published posthumously by her husband in 1993 in an anthology entitled, The well.
